Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 BC–AD 65) was a Roman Stoic philosopher, dramatist and statesman. Born in Cordoba and educated in Rome, he was exiled to Corsica by Claudius for eight years before being recalled to tutor the young Nero. As the emperor's adviser he shared in the government of the empire for a decade, then withdrew as Nero grew more violent and was finally ordered to kill himself after a conspiracy. His moral essays and dialogues, including On Anger, On the Shortness of Life, On Benefits and On Clemency, his letters to Lucilius and his bloody tragedies made him one of the most influential Latin authors.
