Private Letters of Edward Gibbon (1753-1794) Volume 1 (of 2)
This first of two volumes of Edward Gibbon's private letters was edited by Rowland E. Prothero in 1896, after the centenary of the historian's death, with an introduction by the Earl of Sheffield, whose family had preserved the papers. The letters begin in 1753, when the young Gibbon was sent to Lausanne after his conversion to Catholicism at Oxford, and are addressed mostly to his father, his stepmother, his aunt Catherine Porten and his lifelong friend John Holroyd. Through them the reader follows his studies, his years in the militia, his travels in Italy, his life in London and Parliament, and the progress of the Decline and Fall, in a voice more relaxed and witty than his history. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
