History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire — Volume 1
This first volume of Edward Gibbon's History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire covers chapters I to XIII, from the extent and prosperity of the empire under the Antonines in the second century, through the murder of Commodus, the sale of the throne to Didius Julianus, the Severan dynasty, the anarchy of the third century with its soldier emperors and barbarian invasions, to the reign of Diocletian and his colleagues. Gibbon published the first volume in 1776 and finished the work in 1788. The edition reproduced here includes the notes of H. H. Milman and other editors. The prose is long-breathed, ironic and exact, and the history has never gone out of print. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
