Edward Gibbon (1737–1794) was an English historian. A sickly child from Putney, he went up to Oxford at fifteen, converted to Catholicism and was packed off by his father to Lausanne, where he returned to Protestantism, learned French and read enormously. The idea of his great work came to him among the ruins of Rome in 1764, and The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire appeared in six volumes between 1776 and 1788, covering thirteen centuries from the Antonines to the fall of Constantinople in prose of ironic grandeur. He sat in Parliament without speaking, never married, and left an unfinished autobiography.
