After her death in 1886 her sister found hundreds of poems in a drawer, and her friends Mabel Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson edited three selections, issued in 1890, 1891 and 1896, which this volume brings together. The editors arranged the poems under four headings, Life, Love, Nature, and Time and Eternity, and smoothed some of Dickinson's rhymes and punctuation, so the texts differ from the manuscripts modern scholars prefer. Yet this is the form in which readers first met the compressed, startling poems about death, doubt, bees, and the slant of winter light that made her reputation.
