Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) was an American poet who spent nearly her whole life in her father's house in Amherst, Massachusetts, and in her later years rarely left it or received visitors. She wrote almost 1,800 poems, short, elliptical and intensely original, on death, faith and doubt, nature, and the inner life, and published fewer than a dozen of them, anonymously and altered by editors. After her death her sister Lavinia found the manuscripts, and selections edited by Mabel Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson appeared in 1890, 1891 and 1896. The full texts, with her dashes and capitals restored, were not published until 1955.
