Poems by Emily Dickinson, Series One
Poems by Emily Dickinson, Series One, published in 1890, four years after her death, was the first book of her poetry to appear. It was edited by Mabel Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson, who also wrote the preface, and it arranges more than a hundred short poems under the headings Life, Love, Nature, and Time and Eternity. Here are many of her best-known pieces, with their compressed images, slant rhymes and dashes, on death, faith, nature and the inner life. The editors regularized some of her punctuation and wording, so the texts differ from modern editions based on her manuscripts, but this is the form in which readers first discovered her. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
