Monte-Cristo's Daughter
Monte-Cristo's Daughter is one of several American continuations of Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo published in the later nineteenth century. Edmund Flagg's novel moves the Count to Rome, where his daughter by Haydée, Zuleika, is being educated in a convent. Her suitor, the young Viscount Giovanni Massetti, becomes entangled with a flower girl, Annunziata Solara, and is suspected of abduction and murder; the scandal separates the lovers and drives him close to madness, and the Count must untangle the affair. The bandit Luigi Vampa, the Colosseum at night, a visit to the island of Monte Cristo and a trial at the end carry the story along. It is frank melodrama, written for readers who could not get enough of the original. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
