Edmund Flagg (1815–1890) was an American journalist, lawyer, diplomat and author. Born in Maine and educated at Bowdoin, he went west in 1835 and described his travels in The Far West (1838), one of the earliest accounts of Illinois and Missouri. He edited newspapers in St. Louis, Louisville and Marietta, served as secretary of the American legation in Berlin and as consul at Venice, and compiled a four-volume report on American commerce for the State Department. His fiction included Venice, the City of the Sea and a series of continuations of Dumas, among them Monte-Cristo's Daughter, published by the Peterson firm in Philadelphia.
