Edmond Dantès
Edmond Dantes is an American sequel to The Count of Monte Cristo, written by Edmund Flagg and presented as taking up Dumas's hero where the original left him. The count, now a deputy from Marseilles, throws his fortune and his will into the Revolution of 1848, working alongside Armand Marrast and the republican journalists as the throne of Louis Philippe falls. Around the political story Flagg weaves the fortunes of Dantes's children, Esperance and Zuleika, a mysterious prima donna, an Italian lover, poison in minute vials, and the return of Mercedes. The chapters on the February days and the sack of the Tuileries draw on contemporary accounts. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
