Katherine Thomson, who published as Mrs. A. T. Thomson, wrote her Memoirs of the Jacobites of 1715 and 1745 as a series of biographies of the men who rose for the exiled Stuarts. This second volume, published in 1845, opens with William Maxwell, Earl of Nithisdale, condemned after the rising of 1715 and saved from execution by his wife's daring rescue from the Tower of London, and continues with Viscount Kenmure, the Marquis of Tullibardine, Sir John Maclean, the outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor and the scheming Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat. Letters from family papers are quoted throughout, and Thomson writes with evident sympathy for her subjects. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
