Kant's Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics

by Immanuel Kant

About 3 h 11 min of reading8 chapters

Kant's Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics was written in 1783 to explain, in shorter and more approachable form, the argument of the Critique of Pure Reason published two years earlier. Taking Hume's doubts about causation as his starting point, Kant asks how pure mathematics is possible, how natural science is possible, and whether metaphysics can be possible at all as a science, and answers by distinguishing what the mind contributes to experience from what it receives. The book introduces the terms synthetic and a priori that have shaped philosophy since. This edition was prepared in English by Paul Carus for the Open Court Publishing Company, with an introduction on Kant's life and influence. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
