Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) was a German philosopher who spent his entire life in Königsberg, in East Prussia, where he was born the son of a harness maker, studied, worked as a private tutor and lecturer, and became professor of logic and metaphysics in 1770. He never traveled far from the city. The Critique of Pure Reason of 1781, followed by the Critique of Practical Reason and the Critique of Judgement, set out to determine what reason can know, how it ought to act, and how it judges beauty and purpose in nature, and his answers reshaped every branch of philosophy.
