Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysic of Morals
Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, published in 1785 and here given in Thomas Kingsmill Abbott's translation under the older title Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysic of Morals, is the book in which he first set out his moral philosophy. Starting from the ordinary conviction that a good will is the only thing good without qualification, Kant argues that moral worth lies in acting from duty, and that duty is defined by the categorical imperative: act only on a maxim you could will to become a universal law, and treat humanity always as an end, never merely as a means. The third section defends the freedom of the will on which the whole account depends. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
