International Law. A Treatise. Volume 2 (of 2)
War and Neutrality. Second Edition
This second volume of Lassa Oppenheim's International Law, in the second edition of 1912, deals with war and neutrality, the companion to his first volume on peace. Oppenheim, Whewell Professor at Cambridge, begins with the settlement of disputes between states by negotiation, mediation, arbitration under the Hague Convention, reprisals and pacific blockade, then sets out the law of war as it stood on the eve of 1914: its outbreak, the belligerents and their forces, warfare on land and at sea, the treatment of prisoners and wounded, occupation, armistices and treaties of peace. A third part covers neutrality, blockade, contraband and prize. The treatise became the standard English textbook of its subject. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
