Lassa Francis Lawrence Oppenheim (1858–1919) was a German-born jurist who became the leading authority on international law in the English-speaking world. Born near Frankfurt, he taught criminal law at Freiburg and Basel before moving to England in 1895, teaching at the London School of Economics and becoming Whewell Professor of International Law at Cambridge in 1908. His two-volume treatise International Law, published in 1905 and 1906 and twice revised in his lifetime, treated the subject as positive law founded on the consent of states rather than on natural law. Continued after his death by Hersch Lauterpacht and later editors, it remains in print and is still cited as Oppenheim.
