International Law. A Treatise. Volume 1 (of 2)
Peace. Second Edition
Lassa Oppenheim, a German jurist who became Whewell Professor of International Law at Cambridge, published his two-volume treatise in 1905 and 1906; this is the first volume, Peace, in the second edition of 1912. After an introduction on the foundation and development of the law of nations, from Grotius to the Hague conferences, Oppenheim treats the subjects of international law, states and their recognition, succession and responsibility; the objects, territory, the open sea and individuals; the organs of intercourse, heads of state, diplomats and consuls; and international transactions, treaties and the settlement of disputes. The book was long the standard English work and has been revised by later editors to the present day. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
