by J. H. Merle d'Aubigné

Translated by William L. R. CatesAbout 11 h 57 min of reading36 chapters

J. H. Merle d'Aubigné, the Swiss Protestant historian, died in 1872 while completing his History of the Reformation in Europe in the Time of Calvin, and this English translation by William L. R. Cates was published in 1877. The sixth volume covers two fields. The first is Scotland, from the preparation for reform to the preaching and martyrdom of Patrick Hamilton, the exile of Alesius, the ministry and death of George Wishart and the killing of Cardinal Beaton in 1546. The second returns to Switzerland, following Calvin's first years at Geneva from 1536, the disputation of Lausanne, his conflicts with the city, his expulsion, his time in Strasbourg and his reply to Cardinal Sadoleto. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
