J. H. Merle d'Aubigné (1794–1872) was a Swiss Protestant minister and historian, born near Geneva of Huguenot descent. Converted under the influence of the Scottish evangelical Robert Haldane while a student, he served as pastor to the French congregation in Hamburg and then to the court of the king of the Netherlands in Brussels before returning to Geneva in 1831 to help found the evangelical theological school, where he taught church history for the rest of his life. His History of the Reformation in the Sixteenth Century and its continuation on the Reformation in the time of Calvin were translated into many languages and sold enormously in Britain and America.
