History of the Reformation in Europe in the Time of Calvin. Vol. 3 (of 8)
Jean-Henri Merle d'Aubigné, the Genevan Protestant historian, followed his celebrated history of the Reformation in Luther's time with this account of the Reformation in the time of Calvin. This third volume, published in English in 1864, deals with France, Switzerland and Geneva. Its first book follows the young Calvin as a fugitive after the persecution of 1533, sheltering at Angoulême, beginning to preach, and visiting Gérard Roussel and the aged Lefèvre at the court of Marguerite of Navarre at Nérac, amid mounting hostility to reform in France. The second turns to Geneva and the conflicts of 1533 between Catholics and reformers that set the city on its new course. The narrative is vivid and openly Protestant in sympathy.
