Curiosities of Literature, Vol. 1
Isaac Disraeli began publishing Curiosities of Literature in 1791 and went on adding to it for more than forty years; this first volume of the collected edition of 1881 carries a memoir of the author by his son Benjamin. The book is a miscellany of short essays on the byways of learning: libraries and bibliomania, the recovery and destruction of manuscripts, the poverty and imprisonment of the learned, portraits of authors, errata, patrons, the Talmud, Spanish poetry, poets laureate, the Port-Royal society, the custom of saluting after sneezing, Anne Boleyn, James I and a hundred other matters. Disraeli reads everything and retells the best of it, and the book was a favorite of Byron's. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first essay is free.
