Amenities of Literature

by Isaac Disraeli

Consisting of Sketches and Characters of English Literature

About 18 h 36 min of reading675 chapters

Amenities of Literature, published in 1841, was intended as the beginning of a history of English vernacular literature, a project Isaac D'Israeli had to abandon when he lost his sight. What survives is a sequence of essays that runs from the Druids, the Britons and the Anglo-Saxons, Caedmon and Beowulf, through the Anglo-Normans, minstrels and romances, Mandeville, Chaucer, Piers Plowman, Caxton and the first printed books, to Skelton, Thomas More, Surrey and Wyatt, Ascham, Hooker, Sidney, Spenser, Shakespeare and his contemporaries, Ralegh, Dr. Dee and the pamphlets of the Civil War. This edition was prepared by his son, Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield. It shows the same curiosity that drove his Curiosities of Literature. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
