A municipal feud

by Ernest Haycox

About 29 min of reading1 chapters

Joe Breedlove, tall, silver-haired and philosophical, and his partner Indigo Bowers, small, wizened and unable to keep out of a quarrel, ride into a town that its neighbors call a shriveled-up gopher hole just as it is squaring off against a rival settlement that would, it is felt, steal anything not riveted to the landscape. Ernest Haycox wrote this short story for the Western pulps early in his career, before the novels that made him one of the most respected writers in the genre. It is a comic tale about civic pride and two mismatched drifters, with the dawn over the buttes described in a way that shows where Haycox was heading. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening is free.
