Ernest Haycox (1899–1950) was an American writer born in Portland, Oregon, who served in the army on the Mexican border and in France, studied journalism at the University of Oregon and began selling Western stories to the pulp magazines in the early 1920s, papering his room with rejection slips before he broke through. Over the next quarter century he published two dozen novels and some three hundred stories; Stage to Lordsburg became John Ford's Stagecoach, Trouble Shooter became Union Pacific, and Bugles in the Afternoon is his most admired book. He raised the literary standard of the Western and was the model for a generation of writers in the genre.
