John Galsworthy (1867–1933) was an English novelist and playwright. Educated at Harrow and Oxford and called to the bar, he met Joseph Conrad on a sailing ship in 1893 and was encouraged by him to write. The Man of Property, published in 1906, began the chronicle of the Forsyte family that he completed in The Forsyte Saga and two further trilogies, and his plays Strife, Justice and The Skin Game attacked social injustice. He was the first president of PEN International in 1921, refused a knighthood, accepted the Order of Merit in 1929 and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932.
