James Edward Talmage (1862–1933) was an English-born American geologist, educator and apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His family emigrated from Berkshire to Utah when he was fourteen; he studied at Lehigh and Johns Hopkins, taught chemistry and geology, served as president of Latter-day Saints' College and of the University of Utah, and was a fellow of several British scientific societies. Ordained an apostle in 1911, he wrote The Articles of Faith, The House of the Lord, and Jesus the Christ, completed in 1915 in a room of the Salt Lake Temple, which remain standard doctrinal works of his church.
