Wilhelm Tell

by Friedrich Schiller

Translated by Sir Theodore MartinAbout 2 h 09 min of reading20 chapters

Wilhelm Tell, first performed in 1804, is the last completed play of Friedrich Schiller, translated here by Sir Theodore Martin. In the Swiss cantons of Schwyz, Uri and Unterwalden, the people suffer under the arrogant Austrian governor Gessler. As leaders of the cantons swear an oath of mutual defense, the hunter Tell, a man of few words who prefers to act alone, is forced by Gessler to shoot an apple from his son's head. Schiller turns the old legend into a drama of national liberty, set among lakes and mountains, with crowd scenes and a hero of the people. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
