The Robbers

by Friedrich Schiller

About 3 h 21 min of reading23 chapters

The Robbers, first published in 1781 and performed at Mannheim the following year, was Friedrich Schiller's first play and an explosive debut of the Sturm und Drang. Karl Moor, the generous but headstrong elder son of an aging count, is cast off by his father through the forged letters of his envious younger brother Franz, who covets both the inheritance and Karl's beloved Amalia. In despair Karl becomes the leader of a band of robbers in the Bohemian forests, waging war on a corrupt society, while Franz schemes at home. This English version includes Schiller's prefaces to the first and second editions. Passionate and violent, the drama of freedom, revolt and guilt made Schiller famous overnight. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
