Volpone; or, The Fox, first acted in 1606, is Ben Jonson's comedy of greed in Venice. Volpone, a rich magnifico without heirs, pretends to be dying, and with his parasite Mosca extracts gifts from three legacy-hunters, the lawyer Voltore, the old miser Corbaccio, who disinherits his son, and the merchant Corvino, who offers his own wife. The game grows bolder with each success until the players begin to cheat one another. An English knight, Sir Politic Would-be, and his talkative lady supply a second plot of folly. Jonson wrote the play in five weeks and prefaced it with a defense of comedy as moral instruction; its animal names and savage ending set it apart from the romantic comedy of his age.
