Every Man in His Humor

by Ben Jonson

About 3 h 07 min of reading9 chapters

Every Man in His Humour is the comedy that established Ben Jonson's reputation, first acted in 1598. In this revised version, set in London, old Knowell tries to keep watch over his son Edward, a merchant named Kitely is consumed by jealousy over his wife, and the cowardly Captain Bobadill boasts of his swordsmanship to anyone who will listen. Each character is ruled by a single dominant humor, and the servant Brainworm keeps the plot turning with a string of disguises until the jovial Justice Clement sorts everyone out. The comedy is quick and satirical, a model for the comedy of humors that followed. This edition includes an introduction and a glossary. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
