Vanity Fair

by William Makepeace Thackeray

A Novel Without a Hero

About 20 h 16 min of reading68 chapters

Vanity Fair follows two girls out of a Chiswick academy in the years around Waterloo. Amelia Sedley is gentle, loyal and dull; Becky Sharp, a penniless governess, is none of those things, and she climbs by charm, calculation and marriage into a society that is only too happy to be deceived. Around them circle the devoted Dobbin, the booby Jos Sedley, the Crawley family and a London that measures everyone by money. Thackeray published the novel in monthly parts in 1847 and 1848 with his own illustrations, calling it A Novel without a Hero, and his narrator comments on the puppets with a worldly irony that is the book's real voice. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
