About 11 h 34 min of reading38 chapters

This second volume of The History of Pendennis, Thackeray's novel of 1848 to 1850, follows Arthur Pendennis into his London life as a writer and man about town. Pen is drawn to the shallow heiress Blanche Amory and, more dangerously, to Fanny Bolton, the porter's daughter who nurses him through a fever; his uncle, the worldly Major Pendennis, schemes to secure him a seat in Parliament and a rich marriage by holding a secret over Blanche's stepfather, Sir Francis Clavering. The returned convict Altamont, the journalist Warrington and the faithful Laura Bell complete the cast. Thackeray's subtitle promises his hero's fortunes and misfortunes, his friends and his greatest enemy, and the enemy, as the book makes clear, is Pen himself. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
