Uncle Remus, His Songs and His Sayings

About 3 h 38 min of reading75 chapters

Uncle Remus, His Songs and His Sayings, first published in book form in 1880, made Joel Chandler Harris famous. Its core is a series of animal fables told by Uncle Remus, an elderly Black man on a Georgia plantation, to the small son of the white family: Brer Rabbit, the weak but cunning trickster, outwits Brer Fox, Brer Wolf and Brer Bear, most famously in the story of the Tar Baby. Harris drew on tales he had heard from enslaved storytellers, and folklorists have traced many to African sources. The book also includes plantation songs and sketches of Remus in postwar Atlanta. Written in heavy dialect and framed by nostalgia for slavery, it is now read with that history in view. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
