Nights With Uncle Remus: Myths and Legends of the Old Plantation

About 7 h 58 min of reading77 chapters

Nights with Uncle Remus, published in 1883, is the second and largest of Joel Chandler Harris's collections of the animal tales he had heard from enslaved storytellers in Georgia as a boy. Seventy-one stories are told to the little boy on winter nights by Uncle Remus, joined now by Daddy Jack, a coastal African who speaks the Gullah dialect, by Aunt Tempy and by the housemaid Tildy, who argue over versions and interrupt one another. Brer Rabbit outwits Brer Fox, Brer Wolf and Brer Bear, Brer Terrapin deceives the buzzard and Mr. Benjamin Ram plays his fiddle. Harris's long introduction compares the tales with African and South American folklore and defends their accuracy.
