Unbeaten Tracks in Japan
In 1878, Isabella Bird, already known for her travels in Hawaii and the Rocky Mountains, set out to explore the interior of Japan, largely unvisited by Western travelers. Unbeaten Tracks in Japan is told in letters home. With a young interpreter named Ito, she travels from Tokyo to the shrines of Nikko, then north over mountain roads to Niigata and the northern provinces, recording inns, fleas, rice fields, festivals and the curiosity of crowds, and finally crosses to Hokkaido, then called Yezo, to stay among the Ainu. Her account is energetic, frank and closely observed. This text follows a later, shorter edition published by John Murray, Bird's longtime publisher. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first letters are free.
