Korea and her neighbors
A narrative of travel, with an account of the recent vicissitudes and present position of the country
Korea and Her Neighbors, published in 1898, is Isabella Bird Bishop's account of four journeys to Korea between 1894 and 1897, years of upheaval in which the Sino-Japanese War was fought over the kingdom. Already a famous traveler, she describes Seoul and the royal processions, a long journey by sampan up the Han River, the Diamond Mountain monasteries, marriage and burial customs and the position of women. She witnessed the outbreak of war, was deported to Manchuria, visited Korean settlers in Siberia and returned to an audience with the king after the murder of Queen Min. Her photographs and statistical appendices add to a valuable record. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
