Tristram of Blent, published in 1901, is a novel of inheritance by Anthony Hope, better known for The Prisoner of Zenda. Harry Tristram is heir to Blent Hall and its ancient title, but a flaw in the date of his parents' marriage means that the estate belongs by law to his cousin Cecily Gainsborough, who knows nothing of it. Harry's mother has kept the secret for twenty years; Harry means to keep it too, until Cecily arrives at Blent and he finds he cannot. What follows is a contest of pride, conscience and attraction played out among lawyers, neighbors and London society. Hope's manner is light, ironic and sure.
