Educated at Marlborough and Oxford, he practiced as a barrister and stood unsuccessfully for Parliament before The Prisoner of Zenda, published in 1894, made him famous and let him write full time. The Dolly Dialogues appeared the same year and Rupert of Hentzau, the sequel to Zenda, in 1898.
