Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous, published in 1713, is George Berkeley's popular defense of the doctrine he had set out in his Principles of Human Knowledge. Over three morning walks in a garden, Philonous, the lover of mind, leads Hylas, the defender of matter, to admit that colors, sounds, tastes, shapes and solidity exist only as they are perceived, and that the idea of material substance existing apart from any mind is empty. Berkeley argues that this view, far from leading to skepticism, refutes it and proves the existence of God. The dialogues are a model of clear philosophical argument. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first dialogue is free.
