The Works of George Berkeley. Vol. 1 of 4: Philosophical Works, 1705-21
This first volume of Alexander Campbell Fraser's edition of the works of George Berkeley, the Irish philosopher and bishop of Cloyne, contains the philosophical writings of his youth. It opens with Fraser's account of Berkeley's life, then gives the Commonplace Book, the private notebooks in which he worked out his ideas, followed by An Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision of 1709, A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge of 1710, and the Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous of 1713. Together they present Berkeley's argument that material objects have no existence independent of perception. Fraser's prefaces and notes guide the reader through each work.
