Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus
Marcus Aurelius, emperor of Rome from 161 to 180, wrote these notes to himself in Greek, mostly in camp on the Danube frontier during the wars of his last decade. They were never meant for publication. In twelve books of short reflections he reminds himself that everything passes, that anger harms the angry, that he must do the work of a human being each morning and that death is nothing to fear, drawing on the Stoic teaching he had absorbed since boyhood. This edition presents George Long's translation of 1862, long the standard English version, together with his biographical sketch of the emperor and his essay on the philosophy of the book. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
