The Thoughts, or Meditations, of Marcus Aurelius are the private notes the Roman emperor made for himself, in Greek, during the campaigns of his last years before his death in 180 AD. In twelve books of short reflections he reminds himself to accept what nature sends, to do his duty without complaint, to treat others justly even when they are ungrateful, and to remember that fame and life are brief. They were never meant for publication and have been read ever since as the plainest statement of Stoic practice. This edition gives George Long's nineteenth-century translation, with a biographical sketch and an essay on the emperor's philosophy, in a form prepared for use in schools. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
