Theresa Raquin
Thérèse Raquin, published in 1867, was the novel that first made Émile Zola's name, and a scandalous one. Thérèse has been raised by her aunt, Madame Raquin, alongside her sickly cousin Camille, and is married to him without love. The three live above a dim haberdasher's shop in a covered passage in Paris until Camille brings home an old friend, the idle painter Laurent, and Thérèse's long-suppressed passion awakens. What follows is a study of desire, crime and guilt, told with the clinical detachment Zola would bring to his later novels, and closer in mood to a psychological thriller than a romance. This edition uses the English translation by Ernest Alfred Vizetelly, whose preface recalls the book's reception.
