Germinal, published in 1885, is Émile Zola's novel of a coal-mining community in northern France. Étienne Lantier, a young mechanic out of work, arrives at the pit of Le Voreux and takes a job underground, lodging with the Maheu family and learning the brutal routine of the mine and the hunger of the miners' villages. As wages are cut, his growing socialist convictions help turn grievance into a strike, and the conflict between the company and the workers spirals into violence and disaster. Zola researched the book in the mining districts, and his scenes underground are among his most powerful. This translation by Havelock Ellis includes his introduction to the novel. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
