The Zeppelin's Passenger

by E. Phillips Oppenheim

About 4 h 10 min of reading33 chapters

In the quiet East Anglian town of Dreymarsh during the First World War, a Zeppelin passes overhead and leaves behind an observation car and, it seems, a passenger. Philippa, Lady Cranston, whose brother is a prisoner in Germany, soon finds herself harboring a stranger who calls himself Lessingham and who holds out the one bargain she cannot refuse. Her husband, Sir Henry, is an apparently idle yachtsman whose refusal to take up war work has driven a wedge between them, and the suspicious Captain Griffiths is watching everyone. Published in 1918, the novel mixes espionage, a marriage under strain and a seaside setting Oppenheim knew well, with the war itself kept just offstage.
