The Yellow Crayon
The Duc de Souspennier, better known as Mr. Sabin, has been living in retirement in America when his wife Lucille disappears without explanation. He knows at once what has taken her: a secret society of European aristocrats, whose members are summoned by the mark of a yellow crayon, has reclaimed her for its own purposes. Sabin, an old enemy of the society, follows her to New York and then to London, where he must outmaneuver conspirators, a jealous rival and his own uncertain welcome. Published in 1903, this is a sequel to Mysterious Mr. Sabin, though it stands on its own. It is a tale of drawing-room intrigue and political plotting, built around a hero who is clever, elderly and far from innocent. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
