The Younger Edda; Also called Snorre's Edda, or The Prose Edda
The Prose Edda was written in Iceland around 1220 by Snorri Sturluson, chieftain, lawspeaker and historian, as a handbook for young poets who no longer understood the mythological allusions of the old skaldic verse. Its first part, Gylfaginning, is the fullest connected account of Norse mythology that survives: the Swedish king Gylfi, in disguise, questions three mysterious beings in Asgard and is told of the creation from the body of the giant Ymir, the ash tree Yggdrasil, Odin, Thor and Loki, the binding of Fenrir, the death of Baldr and the doom of the gods at Ragnarok. Rasmus B. Anderson's translation of 1880 includes this part, the Skaldskaparmal on poetic diction, and his own introduction and notes. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
