Heimskringla, written in Old Norse around 1225 by the Icelandic chieftain and poet Snorri Sturluson, is a history of the kings of Norway from legendary times to the late twelfth century. After a preface explaining his sources, Snorri tells the sagas of Halfdan the Black and Harald Fairhair, who united Norway; of Hakon the Good, the Christian king Olaf Tryggvason and Saint Olaf, whose saga is the longest; of Harald Hardrada, who fell at Stamford Bridge in 1066; and of the kings down to Magnus Erlingsson. Snorri quotes the court poets as evidence and writes with a historian's eye for motive and a storyteller's for scene, so that battles, feasts, betrayals and conversions read as drama rather than chronicle.
