The Wreck of the Titan
or, Futility
The Wreck of the Titan, by Morgan Robertson, a former sailor, is best known for its title novella, first published in 1898 as Futility, which describes the largest ship ever built, the supposedly unsinkable Titan, carrying too few lifeboats and striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic on an April night. Its hero, John Rowland, a disgraced former naval officer working as a deckhand, survives the wreck and struggles to save a young girl. When the Titanic sank fourteen years later, the coincidences made the story famous, and it was reissued in this edition with other sea stories by Robertson, among them The Pirates, Beyond the Spectrum and In the Valley of the Shadow. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
