Morgan Robertson (1861–1915) was an American writer of sea stories. Born in Oswego, New York, he went to sea as a cabin boy and spent about ten years in the merchant service before working as a jeweler and diamond setter, then turning to fiction. His stories, collected in books such as Spun-Yarn and "Where Angels Fear to Tread," draw on life before the mast and in the new steel navy. He is best remembered for his 1898 novella Futility, or The Wreck of the Titan, about a giant liner that strikes an iceberg in April, often cited as foreshadowing the loss of the Titanic.
